Old English Setting at Ma Maison

Once you step in, you’ll probably be engulfed by a warm fuzzy feeling. Lowly lit environment with tiffany lamps on each table makes it a rather nice ambiance to just sit down and enjoy the food and your partner’s company. However the seating space is rather limited so it may get a lil noisy and squeezy if the restaurant is fully packed.

Service is nothing to shout about but the staff were rather attentive even during peak hours. An interesting thing to note is that there isn’t any table number. Instead every table was given a set of keys. Just like those hotel room keys years back before they issued slot cards. So all you need is to bring your key to the counter to pay for the bill..

Now the important part…. FOOD!

I ordered the omurice with beef. For me its the first time I was introduced to omurice. Basically its rice wrapped inside a layer of moist egg (sorta like scrambled eggs, but its still solid enough to wrap around). I just love egg especially scrambled egg and sunny-side-up ones.

So ultimately I quite liked the dish. The omurice had a sorta like beef stew by the side with onions and mushrooms. The combination of moist egg, rice, and the beef in your mouth, tastes really good. Its my first time trying omurice so I can’t really benchmark on how authentic is it. But if you like eggs that are stil moist with rice and stew, I think you’ll like this dish.

They have other omurice with other kinds of meat like chicken, pork, etc.

Grilled Salmon

My friend had a grilled salmon. I’d say its a rather small portion that is exquisitely garnished. On the whole, the quality was quite decent though, I think the fish is slightly overcooked.

Both dishes came up to about $20 each. Reasonable pricing for the quality and the ambience.

Finally to end off, we shared a chocolate brownie with vanilla ice-cream. The brownie tasted quite ok. Was quite moist inside with a slightly crispy crust. The ice-cream I think was a normal Hagen daaz vanilla flavoured one.

For romantic fans, looking for a nice cosy (though not necessarily quiet) corner, with Jap / French fusion twist, do consider trying Ma Maison.
